How To Store The Tough Stuff
Freezers and Fridges
- Empty and wash the fridge or freezer 1-2 days before the move
- Ensure that it is clean and dry
- Store AND move standing up with the door slightly open to prevent smell
- When you take it out of storage, be sure to leave it unplugged for at least 6-8 hours to prevent damage (refer to the user manual for specifics)
Clothes and Blankets
- Store all closet clothing in our convenient wardrobe boxes which can be purchased at our location
- Any clothing that cannot be hung can be stored best in any large rubber containers with lids
- Wash and dry all clothing and sheets before packing them away
- Pack the boxes lightly to allow air to circulate between the layers
Mattresses and Bedsprings
- Store in a sealed mattress bag to prevent moisture from getting into the bag. Our mattress bags are designed to push moisture out and prevent it from coming in
- Store horizontally rather than vertically to avoid warping of springs and bedspring wood
Sofas and Chairs
- Remove the legs where possible
- Place on a skid to ensure circulation around the furniture
- Cover in fabric such as old sheets or towels and then place in a sofa or chair cover or shrink wrap to prevent dust
- *any leather pieces should be covered in sheets or towels and NOT shrink wrapped to allow for air circulation as the leather needs to breath*
Pictures
- Climate controlled storage is best for these items to avoid warping or cracks
- Store vertically and off the floor
- Cover in cotton sheets
- Slide between mattresses to ensure extra protection
Wood Furniture
- Wood will expand and contract according to the temperature and moisture content. Climate controlled storage is a good way to control the temperature and moisture content
- Store on skids to provide circulation around the piece
- Cover with old bed sheets to prevent dust
Stainless Steel Appliances
- Shrink wrap and then cover in blankets to prevent scratches to the appliance
Electronics
- Remove all batteries
- Use the original boxes if you have them still as they are best suited for that particular item
- Store in climate control setting to prevent drastic temperature and moisture changes
Fine China and Fragile Items
- Wrap individually in blank newsprint which can be purchased at our facility
- Place paper in all the empty spaces between each item in the box to prevent movement of the items in the box while being moved
Snow Blowers and Lawn Mowers
- Refer to the manual if you still have it and see how to winterize or store them properly
- Remove the gas and fluids to avoid dripping
- Place a piece of cardboard underneath to prevent leaking
- Use rust protection or wipe down the machine with an oil rag to prevent rusting
